In the Restoration comedy The Beaux Stratagem, the "beaux" are Mr. Aimwell and Mr. Archer, two charming yet broke young men who've blown through their fortunes in giddy London. Their "stratagem": to marry for money. Shamed and debt-ridden, they flee to provincial Lichfield and take lodging at the local inn, posing as master and servant. There they encounter a variety of obstacles: a crooked landlord, a fearsome highwayman, a fervent French count, a maid on the make, a drunken husband, a furious butler, a natural healer and a strange priest. But their greatest challenge is love. When Aimwell and Archer meet their match in Dorinda and Mrs. Sullen, their true identities are at risk of being discovered. This timeless romantic farce comes to the stage courtesy of the City Theatre at Sacramento City College.
